Whether you are traveling inside America, or going to a foreign destination, identification is a necessity for all members of your party old enough to carry it.
Many parents are hesitant to identify children, in the event that someone gets their hands on the papers. However, you should still have that child’s information with you, including any health cards, copy of the birth certificate, and even a photo in case the child should become lost in a mall or a large amusement park. What you can give the child in lieu of any personal I.D; is a slip of paper pinned to the inside of a pocket so it doesn’t fall out. On the paper, write the name, location and phone number of your hotel, and if comfortable, something to the effect that “I am staying at XXXX with _____________” and fill in your own name.
The personal identification for everyone should be kept in a safe place, like your room safe, or your hotel’s safe. That includes such things as passports, which can be difficult to replace when out of the country.
An excellent idea when traveling, especially to foreign destinations, is to make at least two photocopies of everyone’s identification and papers as well as your credit cards, and keep the copies in separate places, such as luggage, and your purse. This ensures that you have instant access to at least a copy to prove your identity, and to furnish as proof to an embassy should you be required to go and get replacements before returning home.
